Your goal is cost-effective dust control on your roads. Unfortunately, most dust suppressants make you pay a heavy price for effectiveness. Some are highly corrosive to your vehicles, equipment and steel road structures. Some cost you more in the long run because they last for only a short time and require repeated applications. And some dust suppressants pose a risk to the environment.
But there is a dust suppressant that helps you avoid all these problems. Cargill's Dust-Off Dust Suppressant. Dust-Off is the best choice for your operation because it provides a less-corrosive, longer-lasting treatment that actually helps keep roads in better shape. And it's environmentally friendly.
Calcium chloride and ordinary magnesium chloride dust
suppressants can be highly corrosive. Once they mix with water
and road soil, they form a mud that's more corrosive than road
salt. This mud sticks to vehicles and steel surfaces and can
accelerate rust and corrosion damage. With Dust-Off, you get dust
control that's just as effective as calcium or ordinary magnesium
chloride but with much less corrosion. Dust-Off,
a superior magnesium chloride based formula,
actually helps protect your vehicles, equipment and steel road
structures from rust and corrosion. Think how much money that can
save down the road.
Most dust control agents work in basically the same way. They
dampen and penetrate the unpaved surface causing road fines and
aggregate particles to hold together. Dust-Off performs this job
better than most other dust suppressants because its
magnesium chloride formula is
hygroscopic. That means it retains moisture better than water
alone, which quickly evaporates. So it could cost you many times
more to get the equivalent dust control that only one application
of Dust-Off delivers.* And one
application of Dust-Off usually lasts all
season.
The principal ingredient in Dust-Dff is derived naturally
through solar evaporation of sea water. It has been evaluated and
found to be environmentally acceptable in a dust control study
done by the Environmental Protection Agency and U.S. Army Constru
ction Engineering Research Laboratory.** Plus,
it has been approved for use by the U.S. Forest Service and is in
use in several Western national forests. Most other dust
suppressants can't make these safety claims. For example, oils
and emulsions can run off roads and kill roadside foliage, or
contaminate groundwater, lakes and streams.
Dust-Off comes ready to apply, so there's no time wasted in mixing or preparation. What's more, after an application of Dust-Off, you can travel on treated roads immediately, even with heavy machinery. For your added convenience, your local authorized Dust-Off distributor/dealer is available to help you with all phases of application.

**"Unpaved Road Dust Control Study,"
Fort Carson, CO - Final Report. Oct. 1980 - Oct. 1981.
Defects that develop continually in unpaved roads can waste up
to 75% of a county's annual road budget. When potholes, rutting,
washboards and frost damage are repaired, there's still the
problem of dust control. And where there's dust, there's sure to
be continued road damage occurring. What's needed is an effective
road surface stabilizer -- Dust-Off Anticorrossive Dust
Suppressant. Dust-Off helps stabilize road surfaces and cuts down
on expensive maintenance such as frequent blading and regravelling.
Magnesium chloride performs as well or better than calcium
chloride as a dust suppressant. That claim is confirmed by the
toughest test of all: how it performs for the customer.
Recommendations like this indicate that Anticorrosive Dust-Off is the proven performer when it comes to road stabilization and dust control. For your, that can mean reduced maintenance costs accross the board.
Dust-Off-' comes ready to apply, so there's no time wasted mixing or preparing it. And after treatment, equipment - even heavy machinery - can travel on the road right away.
Spreader trucks with controllable pressure spray bars are best for applying Dust-Off. Most roads need little preparation before application, so Dust-Off helps save even more. For optimum results, the road surface should contain a combination of aggregate and fines. Then, scarify to three to four inches, or a depth sufficient to remove potholes, washboarding, and furrows.
Blade the road to a modified "A" crown, or to an appropriate slope for water drainage. Roads subject to very heavy traffic should be compacted after application. Oil-base treated surfaces may require special pre-treatment for positive penetration.
Wet the road thoroughly and apply Dust-Off according to these specifications:
| Width of Spread | Gallons per Square Yard | Gallons per Mile | Tons per Mile |

A detailed study was conducted in 1989 by an Independent environmental consulting firm on the environmental Impact of Dust-Off. The study shows that when Dust-Off is used properly, and with appropriate precautions, it poses minimal environmental risk. It is recommended that Dust-Off not be applied if a domestic drinking water supply source is less than 25 feet from the surface or on roads immediately adjacent to a low-volume stream or pond used as a domestic water supply where the Dust-Off applied could be washed into the stream or pond.
Dust-Off should not be applied directly to plants, since it can act as a defoliant. There will be some accumulation of Dust-Dff in roadbeds and other areas receiving repeated applications and where there is no disturbance of the soil. The possible accumulation in these locations may affect chloride sensitive plants.
Although the composition of Dust-Off is of extremely low human
toxicity, Dust-Off may cause mild skin irritation if it comes in
contact with skin. Normal precautionary measures for the safe
handling of liquids should be observed, e.g. goggles and flu
shing of skin contact areas with fresh water.
